Writing Your Family History
Dig up Your Roots!

US MED Gives BackIt is easier now than ever before to dig up your roots for a family history. The Internet is a big help, but it is easy to get lost in it.

For a printed history, Family Tree Maker ( is best, according to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. The software, also available from, offers many varieties of family trees.

Advice from experts includes:

* Set aside some time. You'll spend many hours doing it.

* Find stories, not just facts. Check with every relative you know to find what they have to share.

* Don't be too precise. Names of people and cities change or may be spelled somewhat differently, dates may be vague.

* Know the history of the area where ancestors came from. A city may be in a different country from when they lived there.

* Be cautious about buying programs. First check the Internet and your local library. Double check all information on the Internet.

* Use footnotes. They lend credibility to your history and make it easier to keep track of your work.

* Start now. Think of what a treasure it would be if your third great grandfather had written about his life, family and grandparents. That type of gift is what you can give to your own third great grandchildren or nieces and nephews.
