World Population Day
Take Your Medicine... Carefully

US MED Gives BackObserved worldwide every July 11, World Population Day seeks to raise awareness of global population issues and to reaffirm the basic human right to plan for a family. Established by the Governing Council of the United Nations in 1989, it was inspired by a report that the world population would reach 5 billion on this date.

Participating countries observe the day in different ways, many offering poster or essay-writing contests, sports events, concerts or whatever other activities will focus attention on the subject.

Issues include maternal health, family planning, and gender equality.

Asia accounts for over 60 percent of the world population with more than 4 billion people. China andIndia together have about 37 percent of the world's population. Africa follows with 1 billion people, 15 percent of the world's population.
